Basildon Borough Council needed staging, sound and lighting for the count and declaration of a local by-election. With no fixed finish time, because the result can only be announced once every vote is verified, our technician stayed on hand throughout, ready for the moment the declaration was made.
The Event
In June 2025, Basildon Borough Council held a by-election for the Wickford Park ward. Once the polls closed, attention turned to the count and to the declaration, the moment the returning officer formally announces the result to candidates, agents and the public.
A declaration is a one-take event. It is recorded, it is public record, and everyone in the room needs to hear it clearly. There is no running it again if a microphone fails.
The Brief
The council needed staging for the declaration, a sound system to carry the announcement clearly across the room, lighting for the stage, and a technician on site to support the event throughout.
The one thing nobody could provide was a schedule. A result cannot be declared until the returning officer is completely certain the count is correct, and if that takes longer than expected, the technical support simply has to remain ready, however long it takes.
What We Delivered
We supplied and built the staging for the declaration, along with the sound system, microphones and stage lighting, all set up and tested well before the count concluded.
Our technician then remained on site for the duration. When verification took longer than anticipated, that was no problem. The system stayed live, the technician stayed patient, and when the moment finally came, the declaration went out clearly, first time.
The Result
The declaration was delivered without a hitch, and the council had one less thing to think about on a long night. For an event where the timing is unpredictable but the moment itself has to be perfect, that is exactly the point of having experienced technical support in the room.
